REVIEWED BY 'MANHATTAN USERS GUIDE':
The accommodations at the De Hirsch may be basic, but for the many N.Y.U. and Columbia students who can't find other housing, they're a godsend. Budget-minded travelers have also discovered the benefits of a stay here.
It's not the charm of the rooms - they're small, plain and dorm-like, with a twin bed or two, desk, dresser and a closet just big enough to suffice for longer stays. Windows are double-glazed and there is central air conditioning. There's no phone in the room (pay phones are on every floor) but there are jacks, so if you are staying for a few weeks, you can get a phone installed. Bathrooms are shared and each floor has a common kitchen area, washer-dryer and an ironing board (but no iron). It's BYOT - bring your own towels. There is daily maid service and the whole residential area is spotless because the place is cleaned twice every 24 hours.
The real perks of staying here are the facilities, lectures and performances offered by the 92d Street Y. This Y is known for its cultural programming. In addition, there is a first-rate health club to which De Hirsch residents have free access, with facilities including aerobic equipment, squash courts, swimming pool, steam room, sauna, Jacuzzi and a program of classes. Did you miss last night's 92d Street Y concert or lecture? It has been taped so that you can watch it from your personal TV attached to your treadmill or stair-stepper.
The De Hirsch takes the issue of safety seriously, so you can't just show up here and expect to get a room - you need to apply in advance and there is a three-day minimum stay. Everyone gets a picture ID that's needed to enter the residential area. There are surveillance cameras as well. It's much more like staying in a dorm than staying in a hotel but the De Hirsch offers a lot for little money.
