REVIEWED BY 'MANHATTAN USERS GUIDE':
The Southgate Tower is one of ten hotels in the Manhattan East Suite Hotels chain. The group shares a number of things in common. Not only are they all-suites hotels, each offers somewhat-spacious-to-very-spacious accommodations, kitchen or kitchenette, fitness room, and a fair number of amenities. They divide things up as studio suites (which are the smallest and really like a standard hotel room), junior suites, one-bedroom suites, and two-bedroom suites. None is a design award-winner but they are quality hotels at a fair price.
The Southgate is being renovated throughout 1999. For those seeking lodging near Penn Station or Madison Square Garden, the renovated rooms especially make this a good choice.
The lobby area has been extensively redone and you are likely to experience a pleasant surprise when you come off the street into the attractive lobby. There are six passenger elevators and three service elevators so you aren't likely to wait for a ride. Guest room hallways are wide, if not exactly cheery.
Room are pleasing in a quiet way, with red drapes and olive carpets. The mattresses in the renovated rooms are good. There are one-line phones with dataport and voice mail, individually controlled AC and heat, on command movies, iron and ironing board, and clock radio. Each room has a fully functional kitchen. The bathrooms of course are fully functional -- for one person at a time.
The fitness room contains several stairsteppers, bikes, treadmills, some weight resistance machines, a multi-function, and free weights. In the concierge department, one of the staff has the Clefs d'Or designation.
One other note. The building was built in 1929 and there are wonderful period details -- be sure to note the lobby ceiling, the elevator doors and the beautiful old clock.
