You've been asked to do consultant work with a Wall Street firm for a couple of months. You're not in town to soak up atmosphere. Your housing options downtown are few but the Seaport Suites fits the bill.
It doesn't have the atmosphere you don't need anyway but it does have rooms of reasonably large dimensions, one-line phones, some with dataport, clock radio, safe, hair dryer, and VCRs. Some of the larger suites have full kitchens, including stove, microwave, dishwasher, pots and pans and utensils. Bedding checks out well, and windows are double paned (though you shouldn't be troubled in this part of town by too much noise at night).
Guests get complimentary passes to the New York Sports Club two blocks away and there is a complimentary continental breakfast (even the omelet station is gratis). There's no getting around the plainness of the rooms but weekend visitors (who may pay less than $125 per night) and visitors here for an extended stay will probably overlook the looks for location and value. When we visited, one consultant who came for 'a couple of months', was still at the hotel a year later.
