REVIEWED BY 'MANHATTAN USERS GUIDE':

After years of languishing, the new Times Square has materialized with a big bang. The Milford Plaza, however, recalls a time in the 1970's, when 'Oh, Calcutta!' was a long-running show, people packed the Gaiety delicatessen for a hot pastrami and sex shops lined Eighth Avenue. Memories of those days came flooding back after a visit to the Milford Plaza, which appears to have no idea that Times Square is a-changin'.

The lobby is garish in a particularly 1970's way, the hallways have fluorescent lighting and the rooms have single-paned windows. Some bathrooms smelled of mildew, the TV's we saw look to have been manufactured when the Mod Squad was a hit show. Dusty rose, the color hotels love because it helps hide dirt, is pervasive here. The fluorescent lighting in the rooms, though, is glaring and exposes some of the heavy use on the carpets.

Is it a complete disaster? No. Mattresses and water pressure are good, there are two-line phones and voice mail in each room. Closet space is adequate. Guests have access to airline- and theater-ticket desks in the lobby. The Milford is fine as a time machine, depressing as a hotel.
