REVIEWED BY 'MANHATTAN USERS GUIDE':

The new Do Not Disturb signs at the Parker Meridien do not say 'Do Not Disturb', they say 'Fuhgeddaboudit'. A hotel that is thinking about its Do Not Disturb signs in fresh ways (a hotel spokesman says management thought it was funny and New York in attitude) is a hotel with no grass growing under its feet. Le Parker Meridien is, in fact, emerging from a slump and has an unmistakable new energy and look.

Renovations have been ongoing since 1998 and the gussying up has been top to bottom. The new lobby wasn't finished when we visited but you sense a forward-looking mandate - signaled by the Damien Hirst painting - and all new restaurants. There is Seppi's, the French bistro run by the same people who have run Raoul's in Soho for many years. The bar, Jack's, is named for hotel owner Jack Parker, and there is Norma's, named for Mrs. Parker, which, in its bright, modern setting, serves one of the city's best breakfasts.

Guests have use of the first-class, 15,000 square foot health club which includes two racquetball courts, a squash court, and a spa. Up at the top of the building, there is a glass-enclosed swimming pool. You can have a light lunch by the pool or play some ping pong. There is an outdoor jogging track and a sundeck on the roof as well. The pool and the jogging track have great city views. Le Parker Meridien has a basic business center (one IBM computer, one Mac, a printer and fax) as well as a concierge staff. One of the concierges holds the Clefs d'Or designation.

Guest rooms are looking gussied up, too. The look is classic contemporary, making elegant use of ivory, beige and black. Amenities include a hair dryer, safe, iron and ironing board, makeup mirror, a tie rack, data port, voice mail, phone in bathroom, a scale, CD player, clock radio, and a fax machine. There is ample closet space; the marble bathrooms are small but pleasant. Most suites have kitchens or kitchenettes (pots and pans are available on request). Night turndown is standard. Rooms with a south view tend not to look out onto much except rooftop machinery but those with a north view look towards Central Park. One off-note: while two-line phones are said to be standard, in reality they are not. If it's important to you, be sure to ask.

Gleaming new hotels are rolling off the line in New York and many existing hotels are working through their mid-life crises with a complete rejuvenation regime. Le Parker Meridien falls into the latter category and is one of the best such examples.
