Think of a sweet bed and breakfast in the country, chirping birds outside your window and the smell of warm muffins baking in the morning. That's not the Holiday Inn Downtown. As much as we like the hurly-burly of this part of town, it's a tough sell - you might as well know what you're in for.

The area of New York around Canal Street is not the most prepossessing. Visitors not used to this bustling neighborhood might find its littered streets and noisy main arteries off-putting. If noise is an important consideration for you, be sure to ask for a room at the back of the hotel. Otherwise, be prepared for the garbage truck concerto in the early morning hours. If this has you bouncing off the walls, at least there isn't much room to bounce -some accommodations are extremely small, closet space is minimal (one room had only four hangers, the unremovable kind), both mattresses and water pressure are variable throughout the hotel, from firm and strong to soft and weak. Windows were in sore need of a cleaning.

Before it was a Holiday Inn, it was a hotel geared toward the Asian community, since it is located in Chinatown. Now, visitors from Asia make up about 25 percent of the hotel's guests, the rest being government employees (visiting the nearby government offices farther downtown) and tourists.

One bright spot -the hotel's proximity to Chinatown's interesting restaurants and some of the city's fashionable neighborhoods such as SoHo.
