REVIEWED BY 'MANHATTAN USERS GUIDE':
The pink neon lights on the lower facade of the Crowne Plaza were no doubt intended to reflect the garish excitement of Times Square, but were they to be replaced with something just a bit less garish and less exciting, no one would mind a bit.
The taste for pink neon, fortunately, doesn't extend to the interior. The Crowne Plaza is actually quite a pleasant hotel as things stand although they have begun a multi-million dollar renovation featuring an Adam Tihany design. Mr. Tihany is best known for his work on the restaurants Le Cirque 2000 and Jean Georges and he will likely add a more dramatic luster to this mainstream-style hotel. Some of the more winning assets will remain the same. The views, for example, start in the hallways, where single, square windows are cut out at various points, giving guests a connection to the city below. The city is 'below' because there are no hotel rooms below the 16th floor; the panoramas from the hallways and many guest rooms are energizing.
Each room has a generous number of amenities - safe, iron and ironing board, makeup mirror, coffee maker and clock radio. 'Club' level rooms are not significantly different than other rooms in the hotel but guests in these rooms get private check-in and the use of a special lounge on the 46th floor for $30 more per night. The hotel also has an excellent, 29,000-square-foot New York Sports Club that boasts an attractive 50-foot swimming pool. We'll look in again after Mr. Tihany is done.
